LOCAL DOVER PHYSICAL THERAPIST PRESENTS FINDINGS AT
 USA SWIMMING NATIONAL CONVENTION

GEORGE EDELMAN RECOMMENDS NEW PERSPECTIVE ON SHOULDER STRETCHING TECHNIQUES FOR COMPETITIVE SWIMMERS TO PREVENT INJURY

DOVER, Del. (October 22, 2007) – Local business owner and founder of Edelman Spine and Orthopaedic Physical Therapy (ESOPT), George T. Edelman MPT, OCS, MTC, was selected by USA Swimming to present his new approach on appropriate shoulder stretches for competitive swimmers at their National Convention in Anaheim, California on Sept. 27th.

The Sports Medicine Committee of USA Swimming has embraced Edelman’s comprehensive literature review and corresponding presentation that supports discontinuing a handful of inappropriate shoulder stretches in favor of Edelman’s recommended beneficial stretches.

“It was an honor to have an opportunity to speak before the nation’s preeminent swimming community and offer simple, solutions for swimmers to maximize performance and prevent shoulder pain,” Edelman said. “At ESOPT, it is our mission to provide patients with skilled physical therapy based on the most current research and our decades of clinical experience.”

In his presentation, Edelman offered reasons why previously considered routine shoulder stretch techniques were inappropriately over-emphasizing portions of the shoulder joint and leading to shoulder instability and pain in competitive swimmers.

Coaches from the Olympic and National swimming teams were among the attendees in the packed conference room for Edelman’s presentation. USA Swimming is the national governing body for the sport of swimming and is home to the United States Olympic and National swimming teams.

Edelman and his wife and ESOPT partner, Julia C. Gorman, also participated on a Sports Science Task Force for USA Swimming to develop programs for the un-injured swimmer and are members of USA Swimming’s Sport Performance Network of healthcare providers.

ESOPT opened in January of 2006 and serves the greater Dover, Delaware area with outpatient orthopaedic physical therapy services. For additional information or access the entire article presented at the USA Swimming National Convention, please see below.
